| 4. China as the center of the world freshwater pearl industry
|
| In the late 1960s, with no recent history in pearling, China
stepped out toward the pearl industry. The initial Chinese offering,
with an odd shape and crinkly surface in the 1970s and 1980s,
appeared trivial. But, China learned fast and well. As Japanese
Biwa production diminished due to diseases and pollution, China
filled the vacuum. China has all the resources that Japan lacks:
a huge land mass; countless available ponds, lakes and rivers;
and a limitless, low cost work force. In the past decade, China
not only mastered the old farming expertise from Japan, but
also experimented its own innovative techniques, producing bigger
size and better quality pearls. China is now the unquestionable
international center of the freshwater pearl industry. We expect
that Chinese freshwater pearls will keep enjoying tremendous
market demand and enduring popularity. |
